How can we expect humans to appreciate nature unless they experience it first hand?
Hello! I’m Carol
I am a professed tree hugger. I love being outdoors. And I am so fortunate to live in an area of southern New Jersey that has some woods nearby.
Thirty years ago, I read a book – title not recalled - and it suggested that people should go outside every morning and walk for their health. A one mile walk before work in all sorts of weather became a habit of mine. I have inhaled beauty on so many levels this way: watching the change of seasons, smiling at robins in early spring, surprising a fox on the move, waving to the deer, hugging many trees. Through good times and bad times, this daily solitude helps me connect with the Creator. I often prayed that hurting friends and family members could do the same.
Humans need to experience creation, not just for leisure, but for their health and the health of the planet
When I was a kid, we always had to camp on vacation because we couldn’t afford to stay in a hotel. I remember being jealous of friends who flew places and stayed at fancy resorts. Not us! We vacationed in the woods. And my mom’s mantra before we left the campsite – “always leave the place better than when you found it.”
This early life lesson led me to embrace nature, and despise the messes created by humans. It led me through a long career in environmental compliance. It gave me the passion to teach children about Earth Day, and encourage protection of planet Earth.
Early lessons carried over to my family trips as well!
Let’s Go Outside!
Jacob’s Ladder Rescue started as a vision during the pandemic when we were all stuck inside…
Coworkers cut off from each other.
Children in front of computer screens, in the interest of keeping up with education.
Social events cancelled.
Bright spots did occur when outdoor get togethers were planned. Sure, we had to keep our distance from each other…. but hey – we are outside! I think an renewed appreciation of the great outdoors grew during this time.
Jacob’s Ladder symbolizes our need to climb up and away from the barriers that prevent us from connecting us with planet Earth.
Phase One
Phase One is the Homeschool Nature Center, scheduled to open in the Spring of 2025. The base camp is situated in a picturesque forest outside of Mullica Hill, NJ. It will serve to augment what parents/caregivers already provide for their home schooling children. The premise is to encourage child-led education, hands on problem solving, and freedom to explore nature with their peers.
Phase Two
Phase Two Jacob’s Ladder Retreat Center will begin to allow patrons of all ages the opportunity to enjoy the great outdoors. Children fun days will be scheduled to allow them an unstructured setting to play, climb, collect, dig in the dirt and explore. The venue has marked trails for children and adults alike to wander in a safe and healthy setting. Why settle for an indoor meeting when you can be outdoors? The focus is on nature. The benefit is healing in the forest.

What was true in the days of John Muir, is so true today, especially with children. Here are a couple videos discussing children needing to move outdoors!
